Philadelphia Suicide

December 3, 2008

"He always believed," she said, "in a better world."  That’s the last line in an article today in the Philadelphia Inquirer about a recent suicide in Center City, that of a bright 23 year old who was just 10 points shy of a perfect SAT score when he took his test in high school.  The man jumped out of a tall center city hotel to the horror of people who witnessed it from below.  This suicide is especially troubling to read about because the man was so young and had so much of his life left to live.  I can only begin to imagine how complex and numerous the thoughts going on in Zal’s mind were.

Hopefully one of the “changes” that we’ll see with the upcoming Barack Obama presidency is a renewed focus on mental illness in America in a way that helps people identify and get support for their problems earlier.
