Microsoft Excel 2007 Bug

September 29, 2007

After reading a recent short article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, I learned that Microsoft Excel 2007 cannot multiply certain numbers together correctly.

Look at this screen capture for an example.  In this spreadsheet, column C shows the multiplication of columns A and B.    The correct answer to the multiplication problem (77.1 * 850) is 65,535, but Excel displays the answer as 100,000.

If you use Excel with any sensitive data, make sure that its calculations seem reasonable.  This is particularly critical if you are using it for sensitive or scientific data that might be published.   Hopefully Microsoft will release one of its ever-obnoxious “Windows Updates” to address this problem.
